2nd Sunday of Advent: Shaking Things Up | One-Minute Homily

by | Dec 4, 2022 | One-Minute Homily, Videos

We can all get stuck in routines, even in our spiritual lives. Advent is a time when God shakes things up so that we can see things anew. Dan Finucane, SJ, reflects on how God shakes up our lives. Based on the readings for Sunday, December 4, 2022.

God may have the world in his hands, but he’s shaking things up.

Hi, my name is Dan Finucane and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

If you’re like me, you can get stuck in routines. We can go through our days on autopilot. Our spiritual lives are no different. We can narrow our focus to checking off boxes: yep, prayed today; made it to Mass on Sunday, check!

Advent, however, reminds us that God is shaking things up. Our expectations are turned upside down:

Where we see a dead stump, God sees the seed of new life.

Where we see poverty and affliction, God sees people who need justice.

When we accept things “as the way things are”, God sees chaos and seeks to set a straight path forward.

God is inviting us today to open our eyes; to literally ‘come to’, as the name Advent implies, and get ready for what God is bringing into the world.
