Are You a Weed or Wheat? | One-Minute Homily

Weeds or wheat? Too often we might look at the field of our lives and only focus on the weeds, Jesus looks at the wheat. Austin Kleman, SJ, reflects on the parable of the weeds among the wheat. Based on the readings for Sunday, July 23, 2023.

By what shall you be known?

Hi, my name is Austin Kleman, and this is my one-minute reflection.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us the parable of the weeds among the wheat. At first, the weeds grew with the wheat without notice until the wheat bore fruit, and the weeds did not. But for fear of tearing up the wheat, the weeds are allowed to grow alongside the wheat.

When we look at our own lives, do we see weeds, or is there fruit-bearing wheat?

As followers of Christ, we should be known by the good fruit we bear, but how often do our lives become cluttered with weeds? In my life, I know that when I see a weed, like a flaw or failure, I want to pull it out immediately. But today, Jesus encourages us to focus on and nourish the good wheat and blessings in our lives and to entrust the weeds to him, the master harvester.
