How can we learn the language of God? The same as with any other language, with time and practice. Tom Elitz, SJ, preaches on learning the language of God in today’s One-Minute Homily. Based on the readings for Sunday, July 16, 2023.

Wanna learn Spanish?  I could make you fluent in one month!

Hi, my name is Tom Elitz, and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

I’ve been studying Spanish for years. And I often come across advertisements online that guarantee that they can teach me the language in just a few weeks!

Obviously, we should be skeptical about these apparent shortcuts. Because it takes time and practice to really learn a new language.

As Christians, the language that we are called to learn is the very language of God – the Word of God found in the life of Jesus Christ. And like any language, learning this language takes much time and much practice.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus describes the Word of God – God’s language – as a little seed that takes time to grow and flourish.

So nourish that seed by participating in the sacraments, practicing works of mercy, and praying! All of this helps us to learn the very language of God, and then to speak this language to the world.
