Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent

I have shown you many good works from my Father.
For which of these are you trying to stone me?
— John 10:32, from today’s Gospel

In these last days of Lent, we are confronted with the mystery of why Jesus is persecuted, betrayed, and ultimately put to death. What makes the message of Jesus so threatening, so radical? Is it still that radical today?

What is my response to someone who displays extraordinary goodness and kindness — especially in situations where I am inclined to be selfish and defensive? Am I grateful for the kindness shown, or does it make me even more defensive?
