Being Our Real Self | One-Minute Homily

by | Oct 26, 2025 | One-Minute Homily

In culture, we are often told to “put our best foot forward.” Jose Oros, SJ reflects how God, however, does not want our best self, God wants our real self. Based on the readings for the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

“Let’s be real with God. He isn’t asking for your highlight reel.”

Hi, I’m José Oros, and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

A priest once told me: Confession is a proclamation of who we are—our sinfulness, yes, but also our goodness.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus shares the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.
Both pray, but the Pharisee does so with pride—confident in himself, looking down on others.

The tax collector, by contrast, is honest. Humble. Real.
He prays, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”
And Jesus says he goes home justified.

There’s no pretending in prayer. God sees the real us and invites us to come just as we are.

So, how is God inviting you to be real with Him today?
