The Jesuit Novitiate can be a mysterious time for family and friends of Jesuit novices. Paul Gillam, SJ, offers a look at the novitiate experience from the perspective of a Jesuit who took First Vows in August, 2025 and shares his reflections on the first stage of Jesuit formation.

Paul is from St. Louis, Missouri. He entered the Jesuits in 2023 after graduating from Saint Louis University with a B.A. in Catholic Studies and Economics. Currently he studies philosophy at Fordham university in the Bronx. As a Jesuit he has served at a St. Martin de Porres, a Jesuit Parish in Belize City, Belize; The Mary Mitchell Center, a community center in the central Bronx; and as a small group leader for Fordham's Fraternal Society of St. John the Baptist. He sings in the Fordham Mass Schola, loves to propagate house plants, and passionately roots for the St. Louis Cardinals.
