A Saint for Starting Over | One-Minute Homily

We are never too old to respond to the call of God. Ty Wahlbrink, SJ reflects how this saint’s example encourages us to recreate ourselves when called. Based on the Jesuit Ordo readings for the Solemnity of Saint Ignatius.

Ever felt God calling you somewhere new—but change feels impossible? Too many obstacles in the way?

Hi, I’m Ty Wahlbrink and this is my one-minute reflection.

Before Ignatius of Loyola was a saint, he was a knight dreaming of glory and romance.

His life changed when a cannonball shattered his leg at age 30. During his long recovery, he heard the call of God and offered himself to the Lord. But he faced real obstacles: spiritual doubts, family resistance, and no formal education.

So at 33, Ignatius returned to grammar school, learning his ABCs alongside children. Imagine that.

Yet he persisted. He was ordained and founded the Jesuits—sending thousands of missionaries, educators, and pastors throughout the world.

None of this would have happened without Ignatius starting over.

If you feel God calling you to something new, no matter how hard it seems, listen. It might be how you’re called to be a saint
