What leads you closer to God? Tucker Redding, SJ, reflects on the visit of the magi and how it shows us that God calls to each of us and in different ways. Based on the readings for Sunday, January 2, 2022.

The Magi followed a star, how does God speak to you?

Hi, I’m Tucker Redding and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

Today is the Epiphany of the Lord, when we celebrate the visit of the magi.

The truth is that we know very little about the magi. The ambiguity of the magi might actually be very purposeful by the Gospel writer. They represent all people being brought together by God through the incarnation. This also makes it easier for us to see ourselves in the magi.

How does God speak to you? Is it through nature, artwork, music? The beautiful thing is that God can use any of these things to get our attention, but it can’t stop at just seeing God in the world around us.

Like the magi, we must have the courage to venture into the unknown. To follow the things that bring us closer to God so that we might encounter the presence of Jesus. And when we do, we can offer three gifts of our love, our life, and our very self.
