Costly Love that Saves | One-Minute Reflection

by | Sep 14, 2025 | One-Minute Homily, Videos

The Cross is one of the principal signs of our faith. Greg Okumu, SJ reflects how the Cross is a sign of a love that saves. Based on the readings for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Love leaves scars, and saves lives!

Hi, I’m Greg Okumu, and this is my One-Minute reflection.

When I was a toddler, our house caught fire. My older sister ran straight through the flames to rescue me. She got burned saving me—her hand still carries the scar. That scar has always been a reminder that love takes risks. Love pays a price.

Today, on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, we’re reminded that God’s love does the same. As John’s Gospel says, “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.” Jesus stepped right into the fire with us. Took on the pain. Carried the cross.

So when we feel burdened carrying our own crosses—grief, anxiety, failure, whatever burns us—let us remember: the cross is not just suffering. It’s love. And like my sister’s scar, Christ’s wounds are not signs of defeat—they’re signs of a love that saves.
