Depart from me, Lord: Brokenness and Calling | One-Minute Homily

by | Feb 6, 2022 | One-Minute Homily, Videos

When Peter says, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man,” Jesus doesn’t obey. Thank God for that! Tucker Redding, SJ, reflects on Jesus’ response to our brokenness. Based on the readings for Sunday, February 6, 2022.

How does Jesus respond when we reveal our brokenness? He invites us closer.

I’m Tucker Redding and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

In today’s Gospel, we hear Luke’s version of the calling of the disciples, in which Jesus reveals himself through the miraculous catch of fish. When Peter recognizes who Jesus is, he is overwhelmed and says: “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”

As we get closer to God, we can be confronted with our own sense of brokenness, sinfulness, and the feeling of being unworthy. It can be important for us to express our brokenness and to confess our sins, but we must also see how Jesus responds.

When Peter tells Jesus to depart, Jesus does not obey. Instead, he invites Peter into a friendship that will change his life.

When you feel unworthy, express that to Jesus, and hear him say to you, “Follow me.”
