Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning,
while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
— John 20:1, from the readings for the Mass of Easter Day

The Gospel for Mass today starts off with the empty tomb, unexpected and unexplained. And it ends the same way: “for they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” For all the time spent in preparation during Lent, it’s as if the Gospel is telling us — we’re not prepared at all. Easter is bigger and better than we know how to hope for.

How is God beginning to surprise me this Easter?
