We are All Chosen I One-Minute Homily

Jesus chooses us even when we stumble. Simon Zachary, SJ reflects on Jesus’s betrayal by close friends and his steadfast loyalty. Based on the readings for Palm Sunday.

Your best friends betray you. What would you do?

Hi, I’m Fr. Simon Zachary, and this is my One Minute Homily.

As we celebrate Palm Sunday and enter into Holy Week, it’s telling that, in Jesus’s last moments with his apostles, he knows that at least two of them will mess up. Judas betrays Jesus for some shiny silver, and Peter falls asleep when Jesus desires his friendship. Jesus’s closest friends didn’t always get it right, but he still chose them. Jesus also chooses you. Even in our brokenness, in our shortcomings, even when our actions hurt others or hurt God, Jesus accompanies us but calls us to more, to the Magis, Latin for choosing the action that greater glorifies God. We might continue to stumble like the apostles, but Jesus stays loyal to us.
