Ashes of Humility I One-Minute Homily

Ashes remind us of our dependence on God. Simon Zachary, SJ encourages us to consider why we receive ashes. Based on the readings for Ash Wednesday.

Do I have something on my forehead? Do you have something on your forehead?

Hi, I’m Fr. Simon Zachary, and this is my one minute homily.

Today, the Church celebrates Ash Wednesday, and in our gospel, Jesus displays a disdain for self-aggrandizing prayer. I have the gift of accompanying high school students as a chaplain and teacher. Two years ago, I asked theology students for modern-day applications of Matthew 6. One mentioned some social media influencers who might be showing off their faith. While this might look good, I think what we’re really attracted to is an authentic expression of Jesus. As we enter into Lent and this season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, let’s wear ashes not as a sign that we have it all figured out, but more as a gesture of our own modesty and of our need for God.
