Jesus invites us to reflection before action. Austin Kleman, SJ reflects on Jesus taking time away after hearing about John the Baptist’s imprisonment. Based on the readings for the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time.
Even Jesus needs time to process.
Hi, I’m Austin Kleman, and this is my One-Minute reflection.
In Matthew 4, we hear that Jesus takes time alone after learning of John the Baptist’s imprisonment. Jesus takes time to process this news about his cousin and friend. Perhaps unexpectedly, it’s at this difficult moment that Jesus begins to preach his message. Jesus takes time to grieve for John, but then uses this experience of reflection to launch his ministry.
How often do we try and rush from bad news to something positive? We bury feelings of grief, frustration, or anger, while repeating to ourselves that “God only gives us what we can handle.” What if instead of rushing past these difficulties, we took the time to reflect and pray with them?
This Gospel story shows us that God is at work even in our most difficult moments. Our task is to listen to God’s voice and follow the invitation. Just like Jesus.
