Packing light can be hard. Will Hayes, SJ reflects how Christians are invited to put their trust more in Christ than things. Based on the readings for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Sometimes we have to travel light.
Hi, I’m Will Hayes and this is my one-minute reflection.
As a Jesuit, I move often—new cities and new missions. That means I can’t carry much. When I entered religious life, I had to let go of a lot—books, clothes, and furniture. It wasn’t easy. But in time, I found this was a gift. It taught me not to rely on things, but on Christ.
In Luke 12, Jesus warns against storing up treasures for ourselves. He tells of a man who builds bigger barns, only to die that night. It’s a reminder: we can’t cling to what won’t last.
Letting go makes room—for trust, for freedom, for God. As followers of Christ, we’re invited to travel light, so our hands and hearts are free to receive what truly matters: God’s love and grace. After all, this is more than enough.
