Presence Over Productivity | One-Minute Homily

by | Jul 20, 2025 | One-Minute Homily

Does living our faith always mean doing something? Greg Okumu, SJ, reflects on how the business should not prevent us from sitting at the feet of Our Lord. Based on the readings for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Are you busy?

Hi, I’m Greg Okumu, and this is my One-Minute reflection.

As a teacher, I get this tension. My day’s packed: grading and planning. But the moment that stays with me is when I sit with a struggling student and just listen. That’s when I feel fulfilled.

In today’s Gospel, Martha is doing all the right things. Serving, working, caring for Jesus. But Mary? She just sits at his feet. And listens to him. She chooses presence over productivity; being with Jesus, not just working for him.

We live in a world that rewards hustle. Productivity is praised, multitasking is expected. And don’t get me wrong—work is good. But sometimes, the work consumes us. And we forget to be attentive- to God, to others, even to ourselves.

So the next time life gets busy—and it will—pause. Sit at the feet of Jesus. Let presence lead.
