Remember Sr. Cristina, the italian nun who one Italy’s version of The Voice? Well she is out with a new music video, and well she is putting a new spin on Madonna’s classic Like a Virgin.
This is a stark contrast to the way Madonna originally performed the song. Sr. Cristina sings it with a certain reverence that I never imagined could be applied to this song. There is something striking about seeing a young nun, in habit, singing the line like a virgin, you can feel it is her way of expressing her gratitude to God.
I’m certainly no stranger to finding God in love songs. I still remember sitting in traffic listening to Billy JoeI sing Just the way you are and feeling closer to God than I had in a while. That was one of the first moments when I felt surprised by God. These unexpected moments that are filled with gratitude.
Sr. Cristina is releasing a full CD soon, I’m looking forward to her take on old favorites that express her love and gratitude to God. At the middle school dances that I never went to, the chaperones would say “Leave room for the Holy Spirit” if youngsters were dancing too close. I think that is what happened here when listening to Sr. Cristina, she takes a song so familiar and surprises us with a new way of appreciating it. If we’re open to it, the Holy Spirit can lead us to familiar and unfamiliar ways of knowing God.
