In just a few weeks, on January 6, the third series of the hit show “Downton Abbey” will premiere on PBS. As previous posts may suggest, I’m looking forward to the new season – but am not quite wishing it were January 6 already (school starts on January 7 after all, and I’m not one for wishing away the Christmas season or the holiday break!).
But last week during finals, one of the Jesuits in my community put me on to a little bit of Downton that may help you get into the aristocratic Christmas spirit. Sure, you’ve heard the holiday albums by Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, and Josh Groban. But have you come across the latest celebrity album, “A Very Carson Christmas”?
There’s something about the video that leaves me somewhat mesmerized by it, though I struggle to figure out what it is. Perhaps it’s the incongruity of hearing either pop music or Christmas favorites rendered in a prim English accent. But whatever the reason, I doubt this will work as my submission for TJP’s “sacred or secular” Christmas Playlist. Not even the Christmas tree in the background can link Carson’s rendition of “Moves Like Jagger” and the holiday — but I appreciated the appetizer for the new season of Downton nonetheless.
