Week in Review — June 4-10 2012

by | Jun 10, 2012 | Week in Review

No place is God-forsaken, as Brendan Busse reminds us — not even, may we be so bold to claim, as the virtual space of the internet. God shows up here too, and that’s why we spend so much time hanging out here as well, in the watchtower, as Brendan puts it, pointing out God setting the world aflame with love.

This is a week where we have much to be grateful for. Across the U.S., a number of our Jesuit brothers were ordained to the priesthood, including two of TJP’s own: Jay Hooks and Paul Lickteig. As one of the prayers of the ordination rite puts it, “May God who has begun this good work in you bring it to fulfillment.”

It may not be bromance, but Matt Spotts is joining Jeff Sullivan in the top-ten-list game, with the top ten reasons you should pay attention to the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.

Jeff Johnson takes a look at HBO’s Girls — and it turns out that despite the buzz, it’s not so much contemporary as a piece of nostalgia for Bobos, or as Jeff puts it, “Living the Dream One Mistake at a Time.”

What do Caravaggio’s Narcisssus, von Honthorst’s The Denial of Peter, and Disney’s The Lion King all have in common? They all feature in Joe Simmons’s latest post, part one of his reflection on what evil looks like.

And Tim O’Brien would like to go on record saying that no matter how extravagant Hollywood gets, they haven’t gotten anywhere close to capturing how awesome nuns and sisters really are.

As we gear up for another week here at TJP, we’ve got a first to share with you: for the first time, almost half the staff is under the same roof, as we gather for two days of meetings to look back on our first months and plan for the future. We usually wrap up Week in Review promising you more good stuff to come, but today that promise seems more solid than ever. Chime in the comments below and let us know what you’d like to see in TJP’s future, and stay tuned — we’re just getting started.
