Jesus’s encounter with the Samaritan woman shows that one’s life circumstances are not what is most important. Brennan Dour, SJ reflects that Jesus offers us a hope that points beyond ourselves. How is he inviting you to share that hope? Based on the readings for the Third Sunday in Lent.
Jesus points us toward hope.
Hi, I’m Brennan Dour, and this is my One-Minute reflection.
When he meets the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus encounters someone in difficult circumstances. She’s an outcast in her community, her personal life is a mess, and she has to travel under a hot sun just to get water — her life has not turned out the way she probably expected.
Jesus meets her in this familiar place and uses the encounter to show her hope. She comes to see that the circumstances of her life are not the most important thing.
What really matters is not the water that brings her to the well, but the living water Jesus offers her. Discovering belief in him gives her new hope for new life, and it is a hope she rushes to share with others.
Just like for the woman, Jesus reaches out to you. How is he inviting you to find and share hope this Lent?
