Our Motives and Our God | One-Minute Homily

by | Feb 15, 2026 | One-Minute Homily

Always following God’s law is a hard and difficult road. Jon Jue-Wong, SJ reflects on how God is always eager to help us do so. Based on the readings for the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Sifting through our mixed motives gets messy… and that’s where God comes in.

Hi, I’m Jon Jue-Wong and this is my One-Minute reflection.

Jesus’ instructions in Matthew 5 are tough, as we examine all our motives and interactions in the light of God’s law. But our messy lives are complicated, and we don’t always seek God with everything we’ve got.

When we examine ourselves and come up short, Saint Ignatius encourages us to turn to God. In the Spiritual Exercises, Ignatius invites us to ask God for the grace that all our intentions, actions, and operations may be ordered purely to God’s service and praise.

For Ignatius, even having the desire for the desire, such as pure intentions focused on God, is always something the Lord can build on through grace. And that is Good News, as we pursue the Kingdom of Heaven that God has prepared for those who love him.
