Choosing “Advent Love” | One-Minute Homily

by | Dec 21, 2025 | One-Minute Homily

Choosing love is sometimes easy. Other times, we must labor to choose to love. Greg Okumu, SJ reflects that the invitation on this last Sunday of Advent is to choose to love—because God does. Based on the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Advent.

What if love looked more like risk?

Hi, I’m Greg Okumu, and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

I remember a night in college when a close friend told me something that completely changed how I saw them. It hurt. I felt betrayed. Part of me wanted to pull away to protect myself. But something in me said: Stay. Love them anyway.

In the gospel, Mary is pregnant. It’s not Joseph’s child. He could walk away. But then God tells him: “Do not be afraid. Take Mary”. And Joseph chose love; the kind that stays when it hurts.

That’s Advent love. Not just candles and carols—but commitment. Trusting in Emmanuel; that God will be with us—in the mess, in the risk, in the unexpected. On this fourth Sunday of Advent, the invitation is simple: choose love. Because love is how God shows up.
