Listed to God, not Ghosts | One-Minute Homily

The Gospel call to follow Jesus often might also implicate conversion in other aspects of our lives. Ty Wahlbrink, SJ reflects how the story of Lazarus is our call to conversion today. Based on the readings for the 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Like Scrooge, a ghost would shock you into change. Right? Right??

Hi, I’m Ty Wahlbrink and this is my one-minute reflection.

In the parable of a rich man and the poor Lazarus, fortunes are reversed after death. The rich man suffers in Hades. He begs Abraham to warn his family to share their wealth.

This Gospel teaches that our treatment of others matters.

When I used to work for a bank, I would pass a man asking for food every morning. I always ignored him. It only occurred to me later that kindness is free.

It’s tempting to think a ghostly sign would push us to make needed changes. But if we resist, our minds find ways to dismiss it as a dream or imagination. And we carry on unchanged.

So, let’s turn instead to the enduring wisdom of the Church to love God and love neighbor. Scripture may not shock like ghosts, but its call transforms us for good.
