Jesus’ teaching that He has come to set the world on fire might confuse us. But Jose Oros, SJ reflects how, like a forest, a controlled burn can lead to new life. Based on the readings for the 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time.
God’s fire doesn’t destroy—it transforms.
Hi, I’m José Oros, and this is my One-Minute Reflection.
In Luke 12, Jesus says, “I have come to set the world on fire… Do you think I’ve come to bring peace? No, but rather division.”
It’s a hard teaching. This isn’t the sentimental Jesus we’re used to. But the fire He brings isn’t destruction—it’s transformation.
Think of a controlled burn. It clears overgrowth not to ruin the land, but to make space for new life.
Jesus wants to do the same in us—to burn away fear, complacency, jealousy, lukewarmness…
His fire isn’t comfortable. It challenges our habits, shakes our priorities, and could cause division. But it’s all for the sake of greater growth.
So, let us reflect: what needs to be cleared away so something greater can grow?
