Are you “filled with expectation” when you think about the Lord? Fr. Michael Mohr, SJ, reflects on how Christ’s Baptism is a sign of our salvation. Based on the readings for the Baptism of the Lord.
What are you waiting for?
Hi, I’m Father Michael Mohr, and this is my One Minute Homily.
We hear in today’s Gospel that the crowds waiting to be baptized by John are “filled with expectation.” We can think back to moments of our own lives where the anticipation of something glorious to come, be it a celebration with friends, or the prospect of starting a new job, creates in us a sense of excitement and joy.
How much deeper, then, is the joyful hope of the promise of salvation from God who loves us!
The Baptism of the Lord signifies the beginning of God’s saving work in Jesus Christ. Today, we can recall the gift of our own baptism. It is a reminder that God’s work has already begun in each of us. I can trust in God saying the same words to me: “You are my beloved, with you I am well pleased.” As we wait for the fulfillment of the promised life with God to come, let us live our lives with gratitude and a deeper sense of expectant joy.
