Today We Rejoice! | One-Minute Homily

Are you rejoicing yet? Brian Kemper, SJ, reflects on how Gaudete Sunday is a call to live with joyful expectation for the Lord’s coming. Based on the readings for the Third Sunday of Advent.

Today is all about joy!

Hi, I’m Brian Kemper, and this is my one-minute reflection.

The words of St. Paul ring loudly today: “Rejoice in the Lord always! I shall say it again: rejoice!”  Today, we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, which means rejoice!

As we march on in this Advent season, we find ourselves only ten days away from Christmas. So, why not delay our joy until the big day?

Because Advent is more than just the remembrance of a certain point in history, but it calls us to live out these feelings of anticipation and hope. We hear from John the Baptist, who lived his life preparing the way for the Lord. He baptized with water, but announces that the one who will follow him, our Savior, Jesus, will baptize with the fire of the Spirit.

Let’s use this Gaudete Sunday to embrace the joy and hope in this waiting as we look to the one who sets us on fire with his mercy, love, and peace.
