Trust is a Two-Way Street | One-Minute Homily

by | Jul 14, 2024 | One-Minute Homily

In today’s gospel, Jesus instructed the disciples not to bring supplies like extra food and clothing. Rob Lorenz, SJ, reflects on how we’re called to trust God because God has entrusted himself to us. Based on the readings for the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Trust is a two-way street.

Hi I’m Rob and this is my one-minute reflection.

In today’s gospel Jesus sends the Apostles out on a mission with a very specific set of instructions.  He asks them to go from town to town without food, without money, and without a second tunic.  Mark doesn’t tell us what their reaction was, but it might be easy to imagine them in a state of shock.

But it’s also plausible that they were amazed and humbled: after all, this man that they knew–this man that they saw preaching, healing, and driving out demons–had enough confidence in them to carry out the same mission!  He knew their trust in God would help them deal with concerns about travel logistics.

In our own faith life, it can be tough to let go of distractions, worries, or the need to “do things our own way.”  Placing our trust in God is a lifelong journey, but rest assured that God trusts you to become the person you’re created to be.
