Jesus said Christians should be known by their love. Angelo Canta, SJ, reflects on the call to love as a life-long process. Readings are from the Sixth Sunday of Easter.
They will know we are Christians by our love.
Hi, I’m Angelo and this is my one minute reflection.
In our gospel today, we have a summary of the project that Jesus dedicated himself to. The reason Jesus called the disciples, fed the multitudes, raised people from the dead, and the reason for his passion, death, and resurrection was love. The love between the Father and the Son. An unconditional and boundless love that enlivens, encourages, challenges, and consoles. That’s the love in which Jesus wants us to remain. That’s the love with which we are to love one another. That’s the love that should set us apart as Christians.
But, “love one another” is a difficult commandment. We Christians are probably the foremost example of failing to live up to this commandment. I think Jesus knew that. So, his invitation is not just a one-time thing. When we fail to live up to this call, when we hurt each other, when we find it nearly impossible, Jesus patiently reminds us again and again. Love one another as I love you.
