Jesus is looking for a commitment | One-Minute Homily

Jesus’ teachings on discipleship seem tough, but Matthew Zurcher, SJ, reminds us that Jesus is looking for a relationship with us, and that requires commitment. Based on the readings for Sunday, June 26, 2022.

What does true commitment look like?

Hi, I’m Matthew Zurcher and this is my One-Minute Reflection.

A chicken and a pig are walking down the street. Passing a church sign that says “Donations Needed: Help Us Feed the Hungry,” the chicken suggests they help out. The pig asks, “What will we give them?” “Ham and eggs!” answers the chicken. After pondering for a moment, the pig says, “Well, for you that’s pretty convenient, but for me that’s quite a commitment.”

In our gospel today, we hear a handful of Jesus’ intense teachings about discipleship. When Jesus looks at you and says “Follow me,” he doesn’t just want what is convenient, he wants the whole thing. Your zeal and your sheepishness, your glee and your blemishes. It all matters.

Today, when we hear Jesus’ invitation to follow him once again, let’s remember that he’s asking for commitment. A relationship with all that you are.
