Peace be with you! We are all in search of peace, but it seems hard to find at times. Matthew Zurcher, SJ, reminds us that Christ offers us lasting peace, a peace beyond what we can find on our own. Based on the readings for Sunday, May 22, 2022.
My peace I give to you.
My name is Matthew Zurcher and this is my One-Minute Reflection.
Today, Jesus promises us the gift of his peace. If we look at 2022 so far, it seems like this world God created and loves still fights to reject that gift. But Jesus says not as the world gives do I give it to you.
Jesus’ peace is not the peace offered by military intimidation, mutual funds, or shallow distractions. Jesus’ peace is not the mirage of self-reliance or the illusion that we are not responsible for one another. The peace of Christ is daring to believe that he still looks at all he has made––at you––and says, “it is good.” That he still dwells in our springtimes, shipwrecks, loves, and longings. That it’s all worth saving.
Today, more than ever, we need to hear him among us saying once again: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.
