Sweet Freedom | One-Minute Homily

by | Jul 5, 2026 | One-Minute Homily

Smells like sweet freedom. Chris Kinkor, SJ reflects on the freedom we can find in becoming Christ’s disciple. Based on the readings for the 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Mmmm…smells like sweet freedom.

Hi, I’m Chris Kinkor, and this is my One Minute Reflection.

I’ve always enjoyed the Fourth of July. Iowa Sweet Corn, Model Rockets, and catching up with my cousins makes for a great weekend. And same when celebrating with my brother Jesuits–grilling burgers, playing Bags, and watching fireworks are wonderful, too.

But the best part’s knowing that this doesn’t have to end. After all, the Founding Fathers weren’t the first ones to dream up freedom! God has already set us free through Jesus’ life, death, and Resurrection.

Christ invites all who are weary and labor and says “Come to me, and I will give you rest.” He calls us to take on the yoke of discipleship, but He’s the one doing the heavy lifting. Jesus assures us that we’ll find true freedom as His companions.

If you’re worried, just remember what Jesus tells us: “My yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
