Time is at a premium for many in December. Ty Wahlbrink, SJ extends an invitation to practice patient awaiting this Advent to look for the ways God is breaking into the world. Based on the readings for the First Sunday of Advent.
Oh—sorry. Didn’t see you there. But, I’m Ty Wahlbrink and this is my one-minute reflection.
With these things (holds up cell phone), we have lost our ability to patiently wait. Next time you are in a line or are waiting for the train, look around you. Almost everyone is on their phone.
God doesn’t send push notifications. He will not text you. There is no area code for heaven.
God speaks to the heart. Whispers in the silence. Fills our imagination. But these channels are cut off when we mindlessly scroll.
Perhaps treat this Advent like Lent. Fast from your phone while you wait. Use that time to wait for the Lord.
Advent remembers Christ’s first coming and looks for his return. We may not know what exactly that return looks like. But, if we are always looking at this, we cannot see the ways that God is already breaking into the world.
