Have you ever had to tell someone you love goodbye? Jordan Jones, SJ, reflects on Jesus’s promise of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Based on the readings for the Sixth Sunday of Easter.
Have you ever had to leave someone you love?
Hi, I’m Jordan Jones, and this is my one-minute reflection.
As we near the end of the Easter Season, today’s Gospel tells us of Jesus preparing his disciples for his departure from this world back to the Father. Jesus had spent the last three years living with his disciples and teaching them through word and deed. He was probably worried about leaving, and his departure likely made them uncertain and afraid.
To safeguard them before he leaves, Jesus tells his disciples to keep his word, and he promises them the Holy Spirit. In the first reading from Acts of the Apostles, we hear how the disciples rely on the Holy Spirit. They may have wondered how they could continue without Jesus, but by trusting in the Holy Spirit, they could see Jesus still working through them.
We, too, are called to depend totally on the Holy Spirit so that Jesus’ mission might live on through us.
