How do you identify a Christian? While there might be many answers to that question, Christopher Smith, SJ, reflects on the one answer that Jesus gives in today’s gospel. Based on the readings for Sunday, May 15, 2022.
How will folks know that you’re a Christian? Jesus, in today’s gospel, gives a simple test to find out.
Hi, I’m Christopher Smith, and this is my One-Minute Reflection.
It’s not by the crosses we wear, or our statues. It’s not our command of canon law, nor cognizance of the creed. Nor by our hierarchy, fancy robes, nor hymns. It’s by our intellect, wit, charisma, or brilliant arguments. Not by our nationalities, sexualities, nor races.
According to today’s gospel none of these identifies us as Christians. The only litmus test: is love. The only profession of faith required is to love folks freely. This is Christ’s invitation and challenge to us: to live our lives, like the song says, so “they’ll know we are Christians by our love”
