I serve as the chaplain to the softball team at one of our Jesuit universities.  I get to hang out in the dugout during games, which means I get a front-row seat to all the action.  I witnessed a play one day in which one of their players ended up on the ground, and one of our players reached down to help her up– a fairly ordinary act of sportsmanship.

But the memory of that play kept coming to mind, and I started wondering, why do acts of sportsmanship rate such big headlines?  What is it about them that can bring us to our feet, or even move us to tears?  Here’s what I came up with…what do you think?
